Dr. Irshad Ahmed khan Afridi Seminar Library was established on June 4, 2015 in the memory of “Prof. Dr. Irshad Ahmed Khan Afridi”, who was involved in the foundation of ISPA.
The library has a rare collection of books related to fields of Space Science and Technology. like Astronomy , Astrophysics , Physics, GIS & Remote Sensing , Mathematics, Engineering etc..
There are more then 1000 books in our library. The Library has also maintains e-library. It has a collection of e-books and reference material related to Space Science and relevant subjects.
Histroy:
The institute was established by Karachi University’s Department of Mathematics in 1994. It was established as an autonomous research institute with the idea for a space science astrophysics programme and an astronomical observatory was conceived right at the inception of the Karachi University. In 1994, the building and the observatory became a part of the ISPA with Prof. Dr. Jawaid Quamar as its first founding director.
Later, after the retirement of Dr. Quamar, Mr. M. Shahid Qureshi took charge of the institute in 2002. He regularized the academic programs at ISPA and lead the institute till 2010. Mr Qureshi earned his PhD from the same institute under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Nasiruddin Khan (of department of Mathematics, UOK). In Fact Dr. Qureshi was the third PhD of the institute, first being Prof. Dr. M. Ayub Khan Yousufzai, second Prof. Dr. M. Jawed Iqbal (the current Director of ISPA).
On June 4, 2015, a brief inaugural session took place at ISPA where, Prof. Dr. Jawaid Quamar inaugurate the ISPA Seminar Library in the memory of “Prof. Dr. Irshad Ahmed Khan Afridi”, who was involved in the foundation of ISPA. The new name of ISPA seminar library (Dr. Irshad Ahmed Khan Afridi Seminar Library) was approved by the Syndicate of Karachi University.
Book Borrowing Rules for Students
1. The holder of the library card is responsible for all books borrowed against it.
2. Books borrowed can be retained for a period of 2 days.
3. In case a book is required for more than 2 days, it may be reissued. The book needs to be physically presented for date extension.
4. A fine of 20/- per day for each overdue book will be charged.
5. The current market price will be charged in case of loss/damage of a book.
6. No reference book including encyclopedia, dictionaries, or atlas will be issued to any
student/borrower. However, the same may be used for reference in the library.
Overdue Books
1. Books must be returned by the due date. If the book is needed by the University authorities, the librarian will ask the student to return the book, earlier than the due date.
2. A fine of 20/- per day for each overdue book will be charged from the students.
3. Failure to return a book by the date specified will be treated as a serious offence.
Loss and Damage
1. The borrower will be held responsible for material given out on loan. If the material is lost, an immediate report should be made to the librarian to enable appropriate action to be taken.
2. A borrower is allowed to either replace the book lost or damaged by purchasing it
himself/herself or requesting the library to replace it. All books replaced must be of the latest edition. If the book is one of a set of series, the borrower may be called upon to replace the whole set of series.
3. In case the lost book or the latest edition is not available anywhere in the market then the person responsible is obliged to pay three times the market price of the book.
